I agree the little nips with the front teeth are "love bites." There is a 5 month old dog that a friend of mine has and she is mouthing. When she does it, I flip her over on her back and put my hand on her neck until she relaxes.

the nibbles with the front teeth don't bug me. It's the gnawing with all other teeth that really get to me. I like the idea of the bite inhibition and so I have been trying to work on that. But I don't think we are getting anywhere really. I am just afraid he will mouth the wrong person. I don't want him to think mouthing of any kind is ok. I especially worry about children. He has not been around many kids. Simply because he has not had the opportunity. And well I don't want to use my neighbor's kids as training tools. He loves kids. He gets really riled up around them since they scream and run and such. It's one thing when it's your child and your dog and it's a whole other ball game with it's someone else's child. None of his nipping and nibbling and gnawing is in anger but I have just not been good enough at teaching him inhibition

He is exposed to other dogs a lot so he knows how to behave with them.

My Puff (YF, AKC field line, 63 lbs, dob: 8-15-'01) was primarily a chewer during her teething stage but she kept it up for some time after.

We used the principle of DISTRACT & SUBSTITUTE

I bought a bunch of chew sticks (tiny pieces of rawhide glued together with a flavored, digestible medium).

Whenever Puff started chewing something I'd rather she did not (hands, ankles, computer wires, eye glasses) I offered her one of these.* They're cigarillo size and, like the American Express ad, I didn't go anywhere without them.

CAUTION: most of those sold are made in 3rd world countries and may be processed with lye and/or other chemicals that can cause upset.* IF you DO try these, please ONLY buy those that are made in the USA or UK (where there are laws on animal foods) AND those that have company ADDRESSES, and TOLL FREE customer service hotlines for any questions.*

I used Hartz Mountain brand and Puff never had any upset.
