I personally play with Zakk (off leash in the fenced-in back yard) for as long as he shows interest. When he starts to "wander", I leave him alone until he comes back ready to go again. He will slow down, get a drink of water, lay down, etc when he has had enough (but usually is ready to go again quickly).
As an aside, I think we can all agree that an unexercised lab is a miserable lab!
Rocksy wasn't allowed any exercise for at least 7 days after being spayed recently, and then less than a week after she was allowed to run around again she badly injured a paw and was housebound for a week! She was not happy!
