My 14 week old, like clockwork, barks to go outside to use the bathroom between 3:30 and 4:30 am every night. We put him down around 9-9:30 pm. This is fine, we get up and let him out. Sometimes he poops, sometimes not, always pees. Then he will wake up at 5:00 am again and start barking to go out. Now, we wake up at 5:30 am for work and usually feed him between 5:30-6 am. Instinct tells me to let him keep barking until it is time to get up at 5:30 am and he will eventually "get it". But, many times I feel bad that he has to poop and so I'll let him out.
What do you guys think? I feel he is "training us" if we let him out at 5 again.
I have a 5mo lab.
I recalled that at 14wo, my lab was still needing to relieve herself at 2:30-3:30 in the morning. and again at 5:30-30.
and I also put her down at 9-9:30pm.
at about 15/16wks, I removed the water from her crate, and I only let her have her last drink at 8pm.
then she only needed to pee at 5:30am (never 6am).
I just had my full sleep at night starting 2-3wks ago, I think after he was 17weeks or a bit older.
Thank you! That's the rule we've been following. I thought perhaps they'd be able to sleep longer at night, as it may be a deeper sleep than during the day (like we have).
It does sound like he is training you. Do you have him in a crate, if so cover it once you put him to bed. If you know you have taken him out at 9 PM he should be good until at least 7AM and even then not be barking to go out. If he starts barking before 7 just tell him to stop. Try during the day to take him out at certain intervals not waiting for him to bark. Barking is certainly an attention getter but could get annoying.
