Hey everyone. Going to be a 1st time puppy owner come Monday. My Wife and I are rescuing a 9 week old Lab/Border Collie mix.
I have been reading and watching a ton of videos trying to learn whatever I can. I still have quite a few questions, so hopefully I can get some clarification here.
- I work from home, so I can supervise her all the time.
- We live in a condo
- No other pets other than a fish tank and hamster
- I want to crate train
- I want to clicker train
1: She is coming from a rescue. I'm pretty sure there is some unpleasant things on her fur and paws. Is it ok to give her a bath 1st thing when I bring her home?
2: I read that immediately after bringing her home I should let her relieve herself where she would normally do her business. Does this mean I should take her across the street to the park or let her use the pee pads I bought?
3: When should I start clicker training with basic commands?
4: I bought Taste of the Wild Puppy Food. 3/4C 3 times per day sound right?
5: Should I start crate training from day 1?
I'm sure I will have more questions, but any help would be appreciated.
try doing a search on this forum, I just punched in "crate training" and got a lot of info. as the subject gets talked about a lot, on the other hand if you have a specific question and can't find any help, of course post it, I'm sure many will try to help.
best of luck to your new pup.
Too bad there is no breeder to call and ask about this. Really hurts the number of replies on here.
Are you living in a high-rise condo?2: I read that immediately after bringing her home I should let her relieve herself where she would normally do her business. Does this mean I should take her across the street to the park or let her use the pee pads I bought?
no puppy will be able to hold her pee while in the elevator waiting to go outside.
Your goal should be to have your puppy eliminate in the park.
But to achieve that, I think, you will have to let her out to the park every 2hrs or so to anticipate her needs to eliminate.
tho at night, I think you should designate a corner in your balcony where you allow her to eliminate on the pee pad (I don't think this is ideal, but I wouldn't want to go to the park every 2 hrs at night).
I almost want to say that you should carry her to the area where you want her to eliminate, also to avoid her sniffing and taking position to pee, but with a risk that she'll do it on you.Right away.3: When should I start clicker training with basic commands?
I don't see why you should wait. That's the amount I give my puppy, and still give to her.4: I bought Taste of the Wild Puppy Food. 3/4C 3 times per day sound right?
She's 15 weeks going on 16 this Friday.Yep, definitely.5: Should I start crate training from day 1?
if you don't crate train, the living space will be to expanse for her, and she'll eliminate anywhere she wants.
Hope that helps.
