Our 8 week old puppy came home a week ago. Since then we've been potty training her inside the house. Because our vet doesn't suggest taking the puppy outside at this age because of the stray dogs in our neighborhood. We are waiting for the vaccinations. What are the changing steps? How can I train her that she can't do her business inside the house anymore? Is it going to be too late? Should I potty train her outside anyway?
I personally would potty train her outside because I wouldn't want my dog to get confused and think they can ever go in the house. Do you not have a fenced in yard? If you do, I wouldn't worry about the other dogs and just train your dog as normal. I have never taught my dog to go in the house so I am probably not the best for advice on this. I would just think it would be hard to train them to go outside after you have allowed them to go in the house. Hopefully you get other better responses.
The dog needs to be taught to potty outside. You might want to find a more progressive vet. This one seems a bit out of date.
Our apartment has a fenced yard but sometimes I see dogs there. I don't potty train her outside because I am afraid she will get sick from other dogs. But you're right. I will consider your ideas. I know it will be hard to change the habit. I hope she will get used to it.
Thanks you for enlightening me.
You do need to potty train her outside. If you use a leash and just potty with no play all you will need to do is clean her paws afterwards if you are concerned about stray dogs in that fenced in area. Just don't let her eat anything while out there.
You also need to be taking the puppy out to places where she can be socialized…pet friendly stores like Petsmart where you can put her in a shopping cart and she can get used to seeing other people and animals.
There are dangers of illness out there but you can't be so afraid of them as to stunt the emotional development of your puppy. Just use caution and all will be well.

Yes you're right. I have been taking her outside to potty for a week. However it is a patio where no other dogs allowed with a fake grass at this moment. I can't take the risk of her eating something from the ground. Hope she'll got used to the real potty area easily.
