Hi everyone,
I have a couple issues I wanted to get your opinion on and your input to help alleviate the issues, if there are any present. I haven't owned a puppy in such a long time, and even then I did not experience things like this.
Titan will be turning 9 weeks old tomorrow. At about 7.5 weeks he started humping things, which I guess isn't too early or abnormal? I always take the object away with a firm "No!" It started with a stuffed animal, then a towel, then my brothers legs, then my wifes Ugg's. This weekend he met my cousins Shiba Inu and tried to hump him but after a couple warning snaps, he got the point. My aunt brought her adult dog over and he humped Titan, which was returned by Titan attempting to hump him, and on and on. I just ended up taking Titan away, calming him down by petting him and talking to him, then put him in his crate because I didn't like what was happening. My aunts dog didn't hump my cousins puppy, but instead just licked him (down there )and then sniffed him. Should I be worried about this? Is it a dominance thing with Titan? Will being around another dog that humps encourage his humping?
After my Aunt left, I let Titan out to play with my cousins Shiba Inu. They played just fine. They would play bow and then play chase, bark, or nip. If my cousins puppy did not respond, Titan would lay down like he was going to pounce, and slowly crawl towards him. It was hilarious.
The next day we decided to go over to my cousins place to have a play date. It wasn't quite like the night before. They did a quick play bow but they weren't really playing or interacting. They both got a hold of toys and just did their own thing for a little. My cousins puppy would come by and bark at him and then nip at his legs, face, and ears. Titan would look at him a little confused and then walk away. He would then get down to the ground or crawl under a table and try to get him to come after him. They really didn't interact, but Titan was getting nipped at and having his leg gnawed a little before moving away. The final straw was when Titan was laying on his back/side and chewing on a squeeky ball, my cousins puppy jumped on him and nipped at his face and belly. Titan shot up, tail raised, body tensed and barked like I never heard. I didn't think he could bark like that. Play time was over. I just called him over, petted him and calmed him down telling him it's okay. My cousin did the same with his puppy.
Could it be they're not 100% sure how to play yet? Was it bad to have the toys there? Could it be the change in environment or the fact that we were at my cousins house, which is then his puppies "territory"? We are both starting puppy training tomorrow night together and will try a play date again afterwards at my house.
Sorry for such a long post.
Just a couple of notes: Titan and my cousins puppy are both the same age (difference of 4 days). Titan is a little bigger than him, but that doesn't seem to be an issue.
TL;DR - My aunts dog humped my dog, which was returned with him trying to hump him back. Was his humping just encouraged and will this develop into dominance issues? How do I stop this?
My cousins puppy and my puppy played well one night. The next day there was nipping and barking, without play bows. It ended up with my puppy being jumped on top of and nipped while he was chewing a toy. He shot up, got really tense and started barking. We separated them and that ended the play date. Should we be worried about this? First night was at my house, second night was at his house. Could it be a territorial thing? Was having toys a bad idea?
Thanks!
