    I was with you up until the peeing outside. Somehow I doubt my Japanese neighbors would appreciate a huge American gaijin peeing in the parking lot. :-p

    Emmitt just sort of learned how to tell us on his own. It's not the most desirable behavior, but it works for us. He'll jump up on the door and paw at the dead-bolt latch, which makes a noise. If we're not in the same room as him, he'll let out a fairly quiet bark while standing by the door.

    Yeah, our doors are a little scratched (especially on the outside since he does the same thing when he wants to come in), but I'm ok with the fact the he knows how to tell us when he needs to go.

    We never tried to train him this behavior, he just picked up on it on his own. Now we're trying to shift him from jumping to just standing by the door and looking out. He's getting there!
