I have had Stoli since 8 weeks old. She is now just over 2 yrs old. Overall she is a good dog. We trained her as a puppy. She would sit, lay, beg, stay, and heel pretty good. We used a recall collar for outdoor training(off leash) About 3 months ago the recall collar broke. She was pretty conditioned so I didnt use it that much anymore so I never replaced it. We also had a baby 7 months ago. Ok so here is the issues:
Over the past few months she has regressed. She doesn't come back when called always(off leash) started stealing things(socks, baby toys, etc) and her heeling is bad. Also now barks at every sound she hears outside. I know the reason for this is the addition of the baby + less walks/more non-collar off leash play. I want to fix it though. What are the best ways to retrain a 2 yr old?? I am open to any style. Any help is appreciated...
Thx
Bean gets the same way when he hasn't been running around enough and is bored. I'd say try really hard to get Stoli more exercise, although that can't be easy with a baby. Keep practicing all the things she knows, and maybe try teaching some new commands.
Hopefully somebody with more experience will have more advise for you.
I would say try something different while still using the basic commands you already instilled in her. I use a plastic drink bottle with a few coins inside it to get Denali's attention. This is mainly to stop any bad behavior when a command fails. For example, barking (unwarranted). I give it a shake and then he knows to look at me. Startles him I guess. I then tell him it's ok. He usually comes to me too and I praise him. As far as outside. He started doing the same thing. I had him on a 30' lead and he was doing so well with recall that I decided to let him go without it. He did fine for a while but then reverted back to trying to go off and not come back. He has ADD like most labs. haha I put the lead back on him until he was coming back when called. I also bring yummy treats with me. I will call him and when he comes he gets a treat. Not everytime so he never knows when he's getting one and when he isn't. I also continue to use the heel command with my hand in a fist at my side. Again, sometimes there is a treat in there and sometimes there isn't. He doesn't know so he focuses on the hand hoping it will yeild a surprise. I know when he doesn't get enough exercise he is a bear. He'll bark a lot too and drive everyone crazy.
I wish you the best! The teen years should be over so hopefully this is more of a jealousy, bored need more exercise behavior that can be corrected easily.
