Default Best way to train for "company"

    Greetings,

    Ruby absolutely loves company.

The problem is she goes wild trying to greet them and this involves jumping on them.

I've tried keeping her in a sit on a leash but I might as well be invisible.

My plan the next time I have company is to keep my foot on the leash so she can't jump up.

    Any other suggestions ?

BTW, she's 17 weeks old and been to a half dozen family gatherings, etc.

Are you looking into any sort of obedience class? Is that a silly question in Saskatoon?
Sharon - still not a dude.

Not silly at all but so far I have only found one course on line and it started last week, sigh...

I plan to call the SPCA, etc. tomorrow.

    Cheers, Don

If there is a Lab club or an all breed club in the area they usually hold or can direct you to a good obedience class.

Thanks Sharon, I'll look into that... So far I have found two places that offer puppy kindergarten

One uses clickers and the other just treats.

Thanks, not interested in competition at this time

    Cheers, Don

Make visitors turn their back on her if she jumps up.Give her time out in another room - just a minute or so then bring her back in and try again. Lots of praise when she "gets it"

agree with the above, get the gests to help you train. keep her on leash but have them ignore her completely until she calms down turn their back, etc). Or maybe give them a treat and have them make puppy sit and reward.

trying to keep a 17 week old puppy in a sit stay for an extended period (more than 5 seconds) with someone at the door IS a hopeless task. you are probably just training sits in your quiet home maybe with a very short stay - but if you try this with a big distraction - that is just too much of a jump. you need to slowly increase distraction or distance (one at a time).

basically you are asking her to compete at a professional level when she is still learning the game.

Their website says they offer basic obedience as well.
