after they have enough of their shots you can take a puppy class.

if you have friends with healthy dogs up to date on their shots you can bring them there for a visit, puppy kindergarden can usually start pretty early (make sure the facility properly disinfects the facility before each class). you can bring them to stores that allow dogs but NOT pet stores. have friends over as much as possible, make different noises, etc. places highly populated with dogs shoudl be avoided (dog parks, pet stores, hold hte puppy in your arms when at the vet's).

the goal is to balance health as they are highly suceptible to catching many deadly diseses and socialization.

remember that socizliation is not only about other dogs, but different kinds of people (think wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, big people, little people, kids, big hats, canes, rainajcket, men, women) and sounds and environments. have different people gently handle the puppy so he is used to being touched (no hurting or pulling, just gently handling). you do the same as often as possible. New "things" in their environment. different textures. everything.

After Dio had his shots, he attended puppy class, our friends with dogs came over, we took Dio for walks around our neighborhood, around town, and when he was older, to the big city. He was on the boat at 3 months and we had him around many different age groups and ethnicities.

We made a point to show him many different things and people to get him used to it. Seems to have worked!

Heh. Then there's my method: Get stuck in an airport for 12 hrs w/a 8 wk old puppy. You won't BELIEVE what kinds of people you and your dog will meet along the way. ;-P
