    Default Lab Breeders in NW

We just bought our first house and can now breed our Lab, does anyone know of any good breeders? Shes a hunting dog first and for most and shes pure chocolate so I'm looking for a chocolate male.

    Thanks

I'm surprised you've been a member for 4 years and you are bringing this up here. You should really do a search on this topic and see what threads show up.

iv searched the web and came up with nothing, just hoping to hear from people who had some experience with breeders. Didnt try the search button because i figured older information wouldnt be helpfull now since breeders dogs are changing constantly

Are you sure she's pure? Spike's mom was black, dad choco and they had both black and choco pups. You will have to research the studs to make sure they are pure choco for generations. Spike's dad goes out for stud (not in your area) so you may want to look up breeders in your area who have show dogs and they may stud them out - not sure how that all works

Is she registered? If so, did you buy her with limited or unlimited registration? If limited, this means you can not register the puppies (they will never have papers)

She is chcoolate but what does she carry? see guide:
    Coat Color Inheritance

When people come to the board looking for a puppy we give them tips on what to look for in a breeder (what makes them a good and tehical breeder and not a byb):
    - BOTH parents have all the clearances prior to breeding (OFA for hips and elbows, eye clearances, and tested for CMN and EIC at a minimum).
    - BOTH parents compete in some venue and are proven in some way (conformation, field, hunt)-
    - does not allow pupies to leave the litter before 8 weeks of age and puppies are sold on limited registration (with few exeption).
    - and there are alot of others things but these two are essential

A true breeder will likely not give your girl a second look with the clearances.

When you can report back on these things, I think more folks might be able to give you pointers.

When we got Spike we also considered that if something was to happen the breeder would take and re-home Spike. She has also been going through this kidney thing with us and has always gladly answered questions and helped me try to figure things out. That's important to consider too so the pups won't end up at a shelter if they can't be kept. All part of being responsible How much do you know about Maggies health through the generations? If people are going to dole out $1000- or more for a puppy they generally want you there for them if there are any questions...

You really can't consider breeding her until you get all clearances.

And while her sire is accomplished, is she equally accomplished? Plenty of offspring of great dogs are not worthy of breeding. My younger dog's sire is a Grand Champion. Does not make my dog worthy to be bred and he is thus neutered.

Did you buy her on limited registration?

you have tons of time, do things in the right order. first comes the clearances then you start marketing her. if she doesn't pass you won't need to bother contacting hte other breeders. most breeder's wont really give you the time of day if you ask about using their males until you prove she past clearances. and those that do you likely don,t want to use.

you are putting the cart before the horse here. one does not rush into breeding.
