We had been training going potty outside with the bell, and let me tell you that it only has been a week since Roxy was introduce tomthe bell....guess what she is doing?...yes, if she is in the laundry room and wants to go outside potty she rings the BELL!!!! Not with her paw but with her nose. I think that eventually she will do it with her paw, but for now we are excited that she is communicating with us.
Thanks so much for telling me about this technic. Our Roxy is very smart like any lab, she learns fast!
Also, she will be getting her training started next month on the 8/3. We are so excited to start formal training, I mean we had done some at home and she knows sit and stay without distraction but when she is distracted is hard to get her to focus.
My lab uses her nose to ring the bell. I think it's better than using a paw. If your dog uses it's paw your door is going to end up getting scratched. Eventually it will cause serious damage.
Ok, so then I'm even more excited. This morning she was playing with my son and then went to drink water to her blow all of sudden I hear the bell...yes, she need it to go #1&2! even though I hear the bell I kind of question if she really doing it to go potty or to play, but every single time that she has ring the bell she has gone potty. So it proves that she is not playing with the bell, beside she never goes and touch the bell just because
This technique proves to be very effective for smart doggies like Labs!!!!
How wonderful!!!!!!
And distraction is pretty normal ..... try Obedience training if you have one near you. It's a clear winner in getting training practice with lots of distraction as you will train in a class with many other dogs. At first she will seem wild and it won't be very easy but she will soon learn what she is there for and other distractions won't be so difficult.
I highly recommend Obedience to all Lab owners! It has been a saviour for us and it is coming in handy for me now that I have a Labrador who is primarily indoors and a 7 month old baby!
