So after picking up my puppy from the breeder today, I hand fed her in the car during the ride bc the breeder said she hasnt fed them yet. After coming home, I took her to a spot where I want her to potty but she didnt relieve herself. Once inside, I hand fed her the rest of her meal and gave her water. I waited 15 mins and tried to get her to potty again at the same spot. This time she just laid down in the grass and chilled. So I took her back in after 5 mins and tried again after she napped. Still nothing. My dog wont potty! What am I doing wrong?
Some puppys potty 20 minutes after they eat and some it can take an hr. If she does not potty with in 3 hrs I would call the vet then the breeder and ask if she had this problem to.

That^. Today has been a traumatic event in the life of your puppy. She has no idea what is happening to her. Give her time, be patient - you may have to deal with an accident or 2, but that is normal. And - why hand feed? She should be eating out of a bowl just as she did at the breeder.
Sharon - still not a dude.
amen to the above - she has had a huge adn stressful day and that will potentially impact her bowel movements. make sure to spend lots of time outside but be laid back as well about your time outside, the more you try to "encourage" her to go the more she may hesitate and be too stressed to go.
i don't think hand feeding is bad. but don't be afraid to do mix hand feeding with eating out of a bowl.
i hand feed bc i'm reading "the love that dog training program" and she suggests hand feeding to let the dog associate good things come from you. i've fed her twice today and she has peed once but yet to poop. just took her out but she just played in the grass and started chewing on things. and now she keeps scratching herself and whining. ahhhh i dont know what to do, i'm a first time dog owner and i've researched everything before we brought her home but i cant seem to recall anything i've learned now...
just relax and let her be. spend time with her outside, play abit and just let her be somet of the time. it might take her a day to poop, just keep a close eye on her in the house as well.
I agree with the above. It is stressful for them leaving home and a new surroundings. She will pick up your fear so try and relax. It is hard I know.
My first pup was much the same. A few weeks ago I adopted a 5 year old and she didn't potty for over 24 hours. She cried all night the first night even though she had lived outside in her previous home. Took a week for her to settle.

Those first couple of days are going to be rough, especially for a first-time owner of a pup.
Much of how this will go depends on the job her breeder did in socializing, so you may have to play the hand you were dealt. Was it a large litter? From an established breeder? Those factors will affect how she does these initial days.
My suggestion is to set up general routine -- up at 5A w/breakfast, lunch at noon, end-of-day meal at 6P or so -- but let your baby call the shots as to what happens in-between. Gate off a small-ish area (kitchen?) and let her acclimate. Keep the crate always available if she wants to chill from the stress for a while. Offer her toys -- fuzzies may calm her missing the littermates. Sit w/her on the floor. Lots of calm talking and stroking for those first handful of days. If guests are coming, don't have them charge in like a herd of buffalo; introduce one new person at a time over several hours. She will eventually emerge from her shell, begin to blossom.
And peep/poop everywhere... LOL

Thanks for all the replies. Yes she did finally poop lol! I was just really worried and that's due to me being a first time dog owner. And potty training is going OK so far. Look for A LOT of questions from me as I raise this pup!
