Default We want to take her on vacation, but she gets nervous and barks

We adopted a 5-month old lab from a shelter about 14 months ago. She's quickly become a member of our family, and we have few complaints or issues with her discipline.

She's crate trained and used to being alone in the crate during our working hours. She doesn't bark at all during the day at home.

However, when we travel overnight to my family's house, she barks when we leave although we take the same crate and the same comforts from home.

Recently, we booked a dog friendly vacation condo, but we're quickly realizing that we might have a problem if she barks every time we leave to do something.

We've been trying the "Quiet" Command for about 6 months now, but it's hard to do with a Lab who rarely ever barks at home.

Any suggestions? We love to travel, want to take her with us, and we hate the thought of kenneling her for a week!

    Thanks
    charisse

I would check the rules on that dog friendly condo. It is highly likely that you can not leave the dog in the condo alone.

I can't offer much otherwise. Fortunately, HK is not a barker.

how bad is the barking when you leave?
not sure how soon your trip is but you won't be able to "fix" this in the next month or two. there are ways to try and improve it but it will take time. If you take the dog on this trip I would plan to always have someone with him which will impact your ability to do other things.

I also agree with the above, see the rules on letting the dog alone. but either way, if the dog barks non-stop ad you plan to leave the cabin that isn't fair to other people (depending on the set-up of where you are and how lould the dog barks). unfortunately not all dogs are good travellers.

If the dog is quie twhen you leave your own home, and this is just when you travel, I would practice leaving him in other places more often. start with short trips (15 minutes) and maybe even start with crating him when you just go outside or stay around the house (not your house but the other house).
