Spike has a hot spot on his neck. It's getting better but the vet said to keep the cone on for 5 days. I spent 2 nights so far sleeping on a chair because I always heard they shouldn't sleep with their collar on. We went from a traditional cone to a tube by Kong because he looked so sad and couldn't get the hang of eating and drinking with it on and with his kidney issues he needs to drink whenever he wants. The chair is a horrible bed and I am really needing some sleep (all our furniture is pretty pathetic) . He's needing to sleep in his crate too because that's all he knows and he's restless out of it. Is that a valid "warning" or would he be ok in his crate?

I don't leave collars on when a dog is crated...EXEPT when they have to wear a cone. in that case it is the better of the two options. I use buckles collars in that case. or if you have a cone that doesn' need a collar and you just mean the cone itself - that's ok too.
Mine always just wore the cone alone in a crate.
