Question Biking with a 1 year old puppy?

so, yesterday I took Malone on his very first bike ride. He did so great.

I went very slow so that he wouldn't actually be running, he's just trotting. I guesstimate I was going about 10 km/h (oops, hope that's makes sense to the americans... ummm 5 m/h?)

Anyways... he's going the same speed he trots around in the dog park with. Even so, should I NOT bike with him? Is he still too young?

I bike with bentley but he has so much energy when we get back he is still running around the yard like a wild maniac. I only go for about 5-10 minutes. I am going to wait till he is a little older to go any further.

You'll get mixed opinions on this. I don't do this with my dogs as they don't control the pace or have the ability to stop if they are starting to hurt (it's forced exercise). Some people have done it for years and never had a negative consequence.

yeah, sharon that's a good point about the forced exercise.

i guess i'm more interested in knowing if its ok at this age, since he's not officially done growing? even if i'm going slowly... is it still too soon?

thanks! You're probably right! I don't feel 100% about it yet, so I think I'll hold off!

I'm assuming this is on a roadway?? If so, it's very hard on your dog @ 1 yr old. Generally, it's recommended that 'forced' exercise be saved until 2. And that's on grass or sand for running. In the road? I wouldn't....

Hershey Kisses goes one 1-1.5 mile bike rides with me. She sets the pace. I ride a few feat behind her. If she needs to stop to pee, poop, sniff, side trip into the wetland, whatever, I stop and wait for her. It is her trip. I basically ride the bike to keep up with her. It is better than keeping her at heal and my walking pace.

What does she think of it? I certainly don't know, but the bouncing and tail wagging that takes place when I go to the bike!!!!!!
