Default Vocal Queue to be Let Out?

We've only had our pup, Diesel for a few days, but he's a quick learner. He's quickly picking up on the "go potty" command and responds very consistently to his name. He also does well with "retrieve" and "release" commands.

Diesel will be our first indoor dog that we got as a pup. Our previous indoor dog was a four year-old Humane Society resue who was already well housebroken and whimpered to be let out. I'd like to train Diesel to bark once to alert us that he needs to go out and ... use the facilities. Has anyone done this? How did you go about it? I know how to go about training a dog to "speak" but I don't really want to combine that training method with this one.

    TIA

I don't know about one bark... How do you train that?

Emmett is really quiet, he would sit at the back door and whimper and I couldn't always hear him so I bell trained him and I love it! He picked up on them so quick, my 13 year old GSP still won't ring the bells so Emmett will ring them for him, it's silly.

I've considered bell training mine as well. I've heard it's quite effective. At the moment Koivu has one wrinkled-forehead look that seems to mean petmeletmeoutihavetopeeiwanttoplaywhat'sfordinnerw here'smyantler and I have a hard time parsing out what he really wants

Well, I've trained dogs to speak before - one bark - but I had to utilize things that would normally make them bark to do it. I just didn't want to have to wait until Diesel saw something that made him want to bard to train him to bark to be let out ... if that makes sense.

Our last one learned to bark to go out and she also barked to come in. The older she got the more demanding she got. Let me in NOW!!! With the new pup - now 7 months, she does not give a vocal signal. We just let her out a lot and she will just sit by the back door until we let her in, like a garden statue. She also spends a lot of time collecting twigs in the back yard so she is a busy girl. We have trained her to ring the bells but she really does not get it. I will ask her if she wants to go out and she will trot to the door and ring the bells. I have never heard her take the initiative.

Our dogs come ti us then run to the door and sometimes bark only when i dont get up right away! I heard if you wiggle the Bell or bark going out the door they will catch on to it.

Wish I had some advice for you.
Daisy is a "come and get you and whine 'cause I got to go out" girl, while Coco just goes and sits silently in her "spot" by the front door and stares a hole in you!

Although lately, if I'm not paying attention, Coco will come run over to me to get my attention then run back and sit in her spot. She'll do this repeatedly as if saying "hey!! I'm in my spot!! You know what that means!"
It's a tough life.....but someone has to do it.

Thanks so much I just went to pet smart and got the biggest bell that they had for parrots and started to used and told my family to used too.

I still have a question, when you are teaching to use the bell do you ring the bell with her paw and say potty and then wait to see if she mimics you and go outside or wait and see if she eventually will do it on her own before you take outside?

Thanks for the videos Tania and labby.
