one other thing is during the week he just wears the prong you want to take it on and off a lot. the last pup i got(the only pup i will probly ever get) i started with the taking collars on and off and making him wear them at like 12 or 13 weeks.

the idea behind taking it on and off and making him wear long before you actually need or use it, is you get it into his head that the collar does not equal bad. if you put it on and just go to yanking on it he will more than likely thing well the collar is the evil thing not the person yanking on it. even after he is used to the collar just let him auto correct himself no yanking or jerking on the collar.

There is not a one size fits all solution. if working with a harness does the trick fine. Some dogs need more renforcement such as a prong collar or even a shock collar. I see nothing wrong with finding the training aide and method that works. Normally, problems like jumping and/or bad leash manners is really just a symptom of a dog that doesn't respect your authority in general. You should go to the start of basic dog obeidence- sit stay come heel...and of course..no. When throwing the tennis ball, incorporate the sit stay and come commands. Just making the dog run doesn't settle them down, it can just make them hotter unless you start getting them to focus no matter what you are doing.he wants to go get that ball and he wants to play BUT you job as the handler is to get control of when he goes after it- when you say so. When he does something correctly like waiting until you release him to get the ball, lots of praise! He will start wanting to please you by listening.

The shock collar only reminds him to listen to you and do what he already knows. It backs up your previous training not replaces it.
