Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate the input. I'm still hesitant about using the e-collar.

and the best way ive found to work with the e collar is to put it on your puup and go play with it on them dont zap them then after you play for so long then do your training so that youre not jumping straight into your training and them catching onto you trying to put the collar on my buddies lab is like that once the collar comes out she gone

I cannot suggest more strongly that anyone new to e-collars get a copy of Mike Lardy's "Total e-collar conditioning." A properly conditioned dog will accept ecollar corrections and thrive. Mine will bring her collar to me bright eyed and waggin' to convince me to go back out and train. A dog that has not been properly conditioned and does not understand how to turn off the pressure, or why the pressure is occuring, can be a miserable animal, which is neither humane nor fair. If you think of an ecollar as a giant 1 mile check cord, you will be in the right frame of mind.

Ya, be sure to watch some video/DVD on collar conditioning before you use one. It will help you understand and feel more comfortable using a collar.

Kwaksmaker...ue some periods in your sentances...very hard to understand otherwise!

any training aide thats used improperly will cause more harm than good. Choke collar or ecollar..makes no difference. I started using a Sportdog 400 and have found it to be a great aide in getting back control when Sparty thinks otherwise. He wears it when we work but I don't use it much any longer. Combined with the cues and commands, the e-collar will back them up when he is out of my reach and range. I can either yell at him repeatedly or one nick will bring him back again. The nick is just uncomfortable enough that it discourages ignoring a "come" command but doesn't make him nervous or confused. He glad goes out to work with the collar on. I agree with others- they need to know their basic commands very well- sit stay come heel and maybe down -before using the collar. Its ok for a dog to make a mistake while learning these basics but once they do they need to know to obey. I waiting til Spart was 7 months old. its been a very good tool.
