I wrote a poem about Jonah my chocolate lab, he's recently begun showing signs of old age- much more so than my black lab Jasper who's the same age. I also found a picture of him from a pup which was way before digital photography so i've had to photo the photo as it refused to scan very well- any how here goes see what you think.
Mans best friendWhere have all the years gone,
The time has passed so fast.
it's only been the blink of an eye,
but the memories will forever last.
The walks that we have taken,
over hills and dales and chase.
are fewer and further between now,
as you've had to slow up pace.
You used to enjoy jumping
into a muddy lake or loch.
but nowadays our walk is
just a stroll around the block.
We used to go to training,
you were eager to learn more.
But now we have to sit and watch
because your legs slip on the floor.
It's hard to watch you baby,
loose the skills that you once had.
I have to learn your limits,
you're no longer my agile lad.
When we get into the Landy,
we have to lift you up.
Gone are the days you'd jump in,
a young and nimble pup.
But i'm not going to keep on harking
back to how it used to be,
we have to enjoy the moment,
and what will be will be.
So i want to take the opportunity,
to thank-you my sweet boy
for your years of great companionship,
and all the years of joy.
You are our faithful Jonah,
and you will be 'til the end,
our dog, our world, our everything,
Our wonderful "Man's best Friend".

That's lovely, well doneJonah was a gorgeous puppy and is a distinguished older gentleman.
As the owner of four senior dogs and two senior cats I think this verse is especially relevant!Originally Posted by Kate2jays

Lovely poem!
Older Dogs are marvellous. A bit more mellow than the youngsters, but with special joys all their own. Nothing as sweet as a grey nose nudging towards you and a kiss.
Peace!

your poem is really nice - good job
there is nothing more wonderful than a distinguished old sophisticated lab
all I suggest is that you spend every possible second with your old pups, lay on the floor, lay outside, pet them a million times a day - because when they're gone, you would give anything in the world for just one more day...
Jonah is beautiful - you're lucky
<br />Ellis (brown) & Yukon (yellow) - Sadly, we helped Ellis "move along" on Feb 22, 2007 at age 15 1/2 - and Yukon died suddenly on Feb 1st, 2006 - 4 days before his 11th birthday. We are devestated.
That was a beautiful poem. Reminded me of my last lab, Sam. We went from 10 mile hikes, when he was a youngster, to a walk only to the mailbox in his final year :'(
