This is one of the traditional things we've had at Thanksgiving and Xmas forever.
Buy 1-2 cans of sweetened condensed milk (we use Eagle Brand).* Put a big pan of water on to boil (deep pan).* When it's on a low boil, drop the can(s) of milk in; boil the cans on a low boil for 3-4 hours.* Make sure the cans stay covered with the boiling water..don't let the water level drop or the cans could explode. Slowly add more boiling water if water level drops.
When done, open both ends of the can(s) (can standing upright).* Push down on one end, pushing the caramel out.*
To serve, put a piece of lettuce on a plate, piece of sliced pineapple, or just the pineapple, slice of caramel, and top with whipped cream. Very good, but so sweet (pineapple adds to the flavor, and cuts the sweet).

dulce de leche is tasty . . . but boiling something on a stovetop . . . for 4 hours . . . with the potential for explosion . . . is that still within the definition of "easy?" ;D
Sure it is! ;DOriginally Posted by MTI
