Fredmiranda.com is a great place to check out lens reviews...
I just bought the EF 70-200 f/4L IS a few months ago and I absolutely love it... Canon also makes a non-IS version of this lens that's extremely popular, highly rated and 500 bucks cheaper...
Jimbo is right on, and the lens he recommended is a great, sharp lens. I think the first thing you need to figure out is what are you going to be shooting and in what lighting conditions will you be shooting them in. I just bought a 70-200 f/2.8L IS which gives me lots of options, such as shooting in low lighting as well as adding teleconverters while still having a relatively fast lens (i.e. with a 1.4x TC my lens becomes a 98-280mm f/4). However, this lens also adds on extra weight and costs extra $$$. There are times that I wish I had the 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS for that extra reach, but between the dogs and the new lens I am broke.
Mike, Have you tried a converter on the 70-200? I also have the canon 70-200 2.8 IS and wish I had more reach, but I want to get the 17-55 2.8 IS first. Wasn't sure if the converter would degrade the pictures.

I have not tried any converters yet. From what I had read the 1.4x degrades the image very minimally if at all, and generally people are very happy with it. The 2x converter usually is not recommended with this lens, that being said I have seen some images taken in good light that look very good to me.
Here are some reviews from fredmiranda.com on the Canon Extender EF 1.4x II.Originally Posted by Linda1

I have the Canon EF 28-135 USM IS & I really like it. I like the IS feature. But the lens I really wanted was the 70-200 with IS but at the time it was not in my budget. I would like to have a further reach so I'm saving for it or may the 70-300.
For me, I need the IS feature.![]()
Linda, the pictures of Buddy in the We're Baaack thread are taken with the 70-200mm f/4 L lens AND a Kenko 1.4x teleconverter. I love this combination. I can't say I've seen any degradation with the combo. Check out this low light picture with the same combo. This was taken at app. 6:30 AM just after sunrise.

Mike, Jimbo and Monnie, thanks for the information. A teleconverter could fit in my budget much sooner than a new lens!!
Monnie your photo at the beach is gorgeous!!

Thanks, Linda. I really liked the way it turned out.
