I'm going to play with some of my RAW pics in this thread. . .feel free to join me
Composition and focus-wise I'm not proud of these pics, but I needed something to practice on that needed exposure editing. I cropped and resized the 2nd with PSP.

I'll play. I shot this in RAW and JPEG. I did what you said about shooting and editing both, then seeing which one I liked the best. I know which one I like the best. Which one to you think is the RAW and which is the JPEG? Then, which do you like the best and why?

I'm guessing that #1 is JPEG and #2 is RAW...
And I like #2 better because it has more vivid colors, detail and overall more sharp.
Yes, #2 is the RAW. I might decide I like this. This is so easy to convert with PSE5.

Okay, we really aren't seeing RAW photos here as you have to convert them to jpg to have them on the internet. I guess in person or printed out is when you'd really notice the difference?
I guess I'm just not as "into" photography ... and I know I'm not as technically minded. For me the jpg works fine. I'm producing and printing very nice photos. I think digital can get very bogged down in too much technically stuff.
My feelings are, do what makes you happy
With that said, the images posted here don't look all that different or spectacular to me than tweaking them with photoshop.
I'm not bashing RAW use... If you like it, by all means use it. But if you don't want to get into the more technical aspects of digital... shoot jpg. You'll get results you like either way.
For me, yes...I guess in person or printed out is when you'd really notice the difference?
That's great... You have to stick with what you're most comfortable with.I guess I'm just not as "into" photography ... and I know I'm not as technically minded. For me the jpg works fine. I'm producing and printing very nice photos.
Welcome to 2007!!! :PI think digital can get very bogged down in too much technically stuff.
Absolutely.... Also, I'm not trying to convince you or anyone to switch to RAW.My feelings are, do what makes you happy
And I only did this lesson because you and Monnie asked me to.
And I'm glad you are doing it. I have another question. When you print out a picture that you shot in RAW, do you print the edited RAW file, or the RAW file after it's been saved as a JPEG? Can you even print out a raw file (CS2)? When you are shooting in RAW what color management do you have your camera and software set for, Adobe RGB or sRGB?

I'm glad you are doing it too. And yes, I have done some RAW. For me the extra effort wasn't worth it in the long run. I just posted what I did so those like me... those who are technically challenged or intimidated, can understand that RAW is an option, not a requirement, for using a digital camera
BTW Jimbo, are you on a B&W forum as Jimbo24?
Yes you can print RAW files but I only print them after there converted to JPEGs...Originally Posted by buddysmom
