This is, by far, the most I've ever had to spend on books. For this semester alone, the bill came to $670.
I will be accepting donations through my PayPal account.
Damn! Sorry to hear that. Have you set up your "please help put this poor schmuck through law school" Web site yet?
I HAVE to get into legal publishing. Inelastic market, heh heh heh.
The cost of professional textbooks is outrageous.

They know they've got us by the proverbial balls. At least in undergrad you could find them significantly cheaper online, I guess enough people hold on to them that it's not nearly as easy. Plus, I've had at least one professor each semester write his own book, which means you have to buy theirs and it's very hard to find used ones online.
Oh man, that sucks. I'm totally not looking forward to that in september. *gulp*Originally Posted by Nick

I feel your pain. I wasn't even in grad school and had a semester add up to that much. I'm taking two semesters off to let my checkbook rest.
I still say the mafia should get out of drugs and prostitution. They could make a lot more money and have a lot less legal problems if they got into textbooks.

Yes. Textbook publishers typically have the highest return on investment in book publishing, although the margins are still not so hot. The development costs are high because if you are in a competitive area, you are constantly putting out new editions. But I've seen legal textbooks, and one thing is for sure--they're definitely not wasting money on fancy production values (like editing that crap into intelligible English).Originally Posted by Nick
Nonetheless, as I tell students, anybody who gets into publishing for the money is an idiot.
This after a $2,000 hike in tuition. I'm going to be paying these loans off until I'm 90.
Ditto. I just hope I can find a job to justify the piece of paper I'm paying for. At least you'll be a lawyer and have a shot at making decent money. Good for you for having the brains and fortitude to go to law school!Originally Posted by Nick
