Holy Cow! How scary! I am glad that you caught it before disaster struck.

We had a similar situation with an outlet years ago. I could smell this weird stink - and I blamed it on the dog. Even took her to have her anal glands done. And - when that did not make the smell go away we finally tracked it down to the outlet near where she liked to sleep. The face plate had melted!
