For when we move, man we started going through things to get ready for when we sell the house and move...don't want that much stuff to move, I can't tell you how much junk is in our garage LOL...FINALLY DH is getting rid of most of the stuff. I think he's gonna sell a lot of thing in our Local Penny Saver, it's hard to ship some of the things with ebay. I'm soooo scared of moving...anyone have any advice one what will help us when we're ready to move or just any tips at all?*![]()

If you can, try to close on the new house about a week before you have to be out of your old house.... this will give you time to have the new house painted before you move your stuff in, and give you time to clean the old house once everything is out.... Much less stressful that way.

Awww...are you kidding...You may have to fight with Tundra for it...but I think it's all yours![]()
Seriosly, if I see some, I'll send it to you.
BE RUTHLESS in that initial clean-out. If you haven't touched it in a year, DUMPSTER IT. We've just successfully cleaned, cleared, and sold my parents' condo, and found stuff that should have never moved with them when they left their single. It's gonna cost you money (or time and effort, or all three) to move. Consider the contents of every single box: Do we NEED this? Have we USED this? Do we LIKE this? Or is it a better candidate for either the consignment shop or the dump?
Hi Regina!
We are getting ready to move, too.
Some things we have learned:
1. Craig's List (if there's one in your area) is a great place to find free moving boxes. You can also check to see if there is a local Freecycle group. These are also great ways to get rid of old stuff you don't think you'll get much money for.
2. Pack at least one box every day and you'll save a big headache at the end. It's amazing how little of our stuff we actually use on a day-to-day basis.
3. If you are going to move yourself, local truck-rental companies often have better trucks and better prices than the big names. Never use U-Haul (old, crappy trucks, worse service). Of the big names, I've found Budget to be good both for truck quality and for price.
4. If you use pros, we had good luck by looking only at people who specialized in antiques and pianos, or who had insurance coverage for replacement value. Although they are a little more expensive, they seem to be better about packing and moving things carefully.
Good luck! Where are you moving again???
You're right about that...atleast we can get some of the major painting done in the rooms that'll need it, hopefully the house we get will be mostly done and on the newer side.If you can, try to close on the new house about a week before you have to be out of your old house.... this will give you time to have the new house painted before you move your stuff in, and give you time to clean the old house once everything is out.... DH I think is SO ready to get out of here and I've never seen him throw things out like he's finally doing now...I'm the way you are Dan, if I haven't touched it, it's gotta go...no need just looking at it in the back garage if it's not being used. You're right about it costing us more money to move it...I'm gonna mention that to DH too and he likes hearing things like that too, so maybe he'll throw away more thingsBE RUTHLESS in that initial clean-out. I'm scared to move in away, we don't know anyone really out of LI, only some friend in the Poconos...but we're not going that far...that's one reason why I don't wanna go that far...but my parents keep telling me that they're out of LI too when my dad retires...so hopefully they'll come close to us too.
try selling stuff on craigslist - esp the larger items to make easier for local pickup
and post the items everyday or every other day
add pics to your listings
Nathan mentioned moving companies.. I recently used a company called ABF
http://www.upack.com
The service was great - all we did was pack the truck. and if you have someone who can pack a trailer up high - even better. I found their prices to be good. they charge by how many feet you use in the truck. I tracked the truck as we drove from Boston to Atlanta.
we were going to go with a uhaul type thing but we would have had to pay for fuel & get someone to drive the truck down too...
good luck!

Nathan, thanks!! Those are great tips on the trucks to rent, I'll mention to SU that it'll be worth getting a good truck, don't want our furniture destroy.
So far it's still, PA, NJ or upstate NY...I think we're still leaning towards right over the George Washington Bridge, right outside NYC...it'll be closer to DH's job and not to far from LI...I seriosly want a big back yard too for the dogs to run around in, but I want a dog pen made for them do they don't do their business all over...but so they have an option after they do their business to run free in a big yard ;D I guess we gotta see what the houses run too...I know that PA has some cheap houses and very low on taxes.
I've delt with ABF through my work company...I didn't know that they'll do home moving too...that's awesome to know!!!![]()
