My 12 year old that is getting that SAT award tomorrow has just been diagnosed with mild scoliosis. They are sending me a referral to an orthopedist but I'm starting to panic. Has anyone or their kids gone through this?
I have very mild scoliosis. I never had any treatment and have had no problems.
I haven't, but two of my youngest daughter's friends have. Both had surgery this year for scoliosis, but their cases weren't mild. In the "olden" days they would have been in a brace.* Good luck with the orthopedist. I'm sure that everything will be fine.
The school nurses and my son's pediatrician told us he had mild scolioisis. The pediatrician closely monitored him. Apparently, there is a small window of time to actually do something about it (brace?). The timing has to do with puberty I think. My son wound up not needing any treatment. I wouldn't stress over it right now. Good thoughts.
I was diagnosed with scoliosis around the same age. I didn't need any treatment. My right hip is just a tad higher than my left....it doesn't give me any problems at all.
My SU had to be in what's called a Milwaukee Brace while attending high school. He was 6'1" before treatment and 6'5" when it was all said and done.
I wouldn't think it would give your daughters any problems....

I have mild scoliosis, inherited from my father. Neither of us have had any treatment other than occasional chiropractor visits when something locks up or goes out. Both of us have the curve between our shoulders and down a little.

I too have a mild case. Diagnosed around 12 yrs old.
By then my bones were too "matured" for a brace to have helped. I had no treatment, and have been fine. No back aches, and I'm in my 50s.
Hoping for the best for your daughter. Can you notice it when she walks? Is it her upper or lower spine?

She tends to get a pinched nerve once in awhile because of it and that gives her pain for a few days, but it's nothing serious.
Her pediatrician is referring me to the orthapedist. He did tell me that its a 16 degree. That most braces arent even used until 24 degrees? He didn't say where exactly it was but I know she tends to hunch over a tad across the shoulders. Although that could be bac posture couldnt it because he checked her shoulder blades and they were ok and even? He's worried because she had pneumonia a month ago (walking pneumonia) and even though she feels better there was still a spot on one of her lungs that looks the same as in the last film. He's wondering if maybe the spine is doing something to the lung? He wants me to go to a pulminologist just to check. He said he'd rather have me go to the pulminologist and have him look and tell me her pediatrician is nuts than to make her get the next higher up xray which is alot of radiation I guess. I'm so confused.Originally Posted by zoesmom
