I got home about 6:30 yesterday, had a roto-tiller borrowed and I roto-tilled till almost 10 pm, I got up this morning and finished it and returned the tiller while they were at church with Grandma. Yesterday it looked like this:
It looked like this when I was done, the edges are a bit ragged and need cleaned up, but I'll do that with a spade, it's hard to keep straight lines in the dark:
Lexie did real well with the larger seeds, the smaller ones I must say may be thick and thin in places:

Lemol got tired of it real quick, but helped us some:
And Lexie helped me water it down:

What did you plant?
I have a lot of day lilies to get rid of (I know if I call them damned weeds someone will dispute it.)I've got someone to come take part of the hostas (more weeds.) and the rest are not in the way of any of the immediate projects. I have lilacs that I got partly planted that are going along the back fence. I'm hoping to get the garden fenced this week but Rowdy has been fairly good so far. A long ways to go, but I made progress.
BTW we planted radishs, collards, spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, beets, carrots, sugar snap and regular peas, carrots and green beans. I got 4 tomato plants and go them in, but I'm pushing the planting window a bit. I'll put some more tomatoes in over the next couple weeks, but Rita wanted some yellow ones and I found some today.
Covering 4 isn't bad in case of a late frost, but a whole bunch can be a pain. My oldest daughter is going to order from Henry Fields this week and she's going to get me some calico aka Christmas pole type lima beans and some crowder peas. I've got some Country Gentleman sweet corn seed and have some pie pumpkins and some butternut squash, I'm going to do what the Indians called the 3 Sisters with the pole beans, the corn and the pumpkin/squash. The corn, beans and squash in one hill, the beans climbing on the corn and the squash providing ground cover. Got to get some kohlrabi seed yet and some okra, and I'm going to do National Pickling cukes. The okra will go in where the greens are now and I'll do fall turnips and some parsnips in late summer, the parsnips will be mulched with straw and dug in the spring.
As one who is familiar with some of the items and cultivators I'm planting it's all going to be pretty much a late 19th century type garden, I'm planting pretty much what my Grandparents grew in their garden when I was a kid.

Be sure to look close, we all three tossed our shoes away, nothing like fresh tilled dirt between you toes. And yes, I sent two very dirt encrusted kids home with their Mom tonight.

Bet Mom just loved the ring around the bathtub.
Looks like you put in a great garden.

My squash and pumpkins have always climbed like crazy. I can't imagine getting it to stay as ground cover. Do you have rabbits around?
Good job!! The rewards will be wonderful![]()

That's wonderful Glen! It is so much fun in the spring to have the kids help plant. My grandson was so happy last year when I called them to tell them thier beans were up. He's yelling in the background "Hey Kennedy! Our beans are up!"
He was so excited. I love playing in the dirt, it's so satisfying to grow your own food. It's still too early for us to plant though, even with the nice weather, we could still get snow, which they are calling for this week.
