This isn't about "offending the chimps". It's about exploiting them. If you read the entire article you would see that it states that people seeing chimps dressed like humans and acting like them tend not to view them as an endangered species. Personally I think this ad is in very poor taste and to see these chimps in this manner makes me really sad. And angry.

"According to the zoo, people who view chimpanzees in human settings and wearing clothes are less inclined to think they are endangered and to support conservation efforts."

If I were a chimp, I would throw my poop at this guy.

Despite his claim that there is vast scientific evidence to the contrary, I should think that the more people are exposed to animals in some cute, non-threatening way, the more likely they are to support conservation efforts. Nobody gave any thought at all to dolphins until Flipper, bears were only to be feared until Gentle Ben, who cared about lions until Born Free? All cute and all increased interest in conservation efforts.

    Me too.

I have no problem separating the commercial from the endangerment and conservation efforts!

    But, but, but . . .

“There is ample scientific evidence demonstrating the long-term negative impacts that the use of chimpanzees in commercials has on species conservation and welfare,” Dr. Steve Ross, assistant director of the Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes at Lincoln Park Zoo
    There's ample scientific evidence!

I agree with GGR, it seems like it would only help the conservation efforts. Out of sight, out of mind . . . isn't that a scientific term?

It does not seem like an either/or situation to me. Perhaps the conservation groups need to market their cause better. Maybe Career Builder will be a hero here and provide the conservation group some air time after the game for a rebuttal statement. ;-)

Since when have chimps been endangered?

I opened the article, but I am not sure what Colin in his office has to do with this story?

Anybody too stupid to see that this has nothing to do with animals in the wild is also too stupid to do anything to help with conservation anyway.
