UPDATE 10pm
First of all, thanks so much for the good thoughts, prayers, and kind words. Both boys are ok (or going to be ok).
At 4, I still hadn't heard anything (had already called twice earlier), so I called and asked if Bodie was ready to go home. They said yes, so I went to get him. They said Sam was "still in treatment" and to come back for him. They said the vet would sit down with me then and go over everything. I was afraid to ask what all the results were. They close at 5, so I ran Bodie home and went back.
The vet came in and right of the bat he showed me the slide from Bodie's needle aspiration. He said it was classic lipoma and to just keep an eye on it. He said it hadn't felt like a lipoma, so he was very glad about the results. They had done some x-rays on Sam (for free) which he showed me next. His large intestine was very distended with gas and they said the lining was thick like it was irritated. But his blood work was fine and all the organs and stomach looked good. They said they thought he was in quite a bit of pain from the gas and that's why he's hardly moving. They had him on an IV all day with some medicine and to rehydrate him. He starts the ID food tomorrow, just for three days, and pills for 10 days. He's already feeling a little better, moving slightly more, but still has bad diarrhea and is moaning a little bit. He got no dinner tonight. They don't know what is causing the tummy upset or diarrhea, but said he should start getting better tomorrow and if he's not quite a bit better by Friday to bring him back (and bring right back if anything gets worse).
So I got Sam home around 6 and headed out for a previously planned "mom's night out" where I had two big fruity drinks and started to relax!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So Monday night, I felt a lump in Bodie's abdomen, close to the groin. Bigger than an egg, smaller than a lemon. I don't know how I hadn't found it before. It didn't feel like the lipomas that Sam has, so I made an appointment for him for this morning.
Yesterday morning, Sam woke me up at 2am, 3am, and 4:30am with diarrhea. He ate breakfast like normal yesterday and seemed like he felt fine, so I wasn't overly worried. Last night as I was driving home from work, my husband called me and said Sam seemed like he didn't feel well. He didn't come greet me at the door, and mostly laid around. He did eat dinner last night and breakfast this morning, but otherwise would hardly move today. Still has very bad diarrhea. He's walking like every muscle in his body hurts, and only will get up if I make him. So I took them both to Bodie's appointment this morning. I had to lift Sam into my car (SUV so it wasn't easy).
The vet said that Bodie's lump feels harder than a lipoma. So I'm really worried about that. They are doing a needle aspiration and I should have the results by Friday.
The vet was also worried about Sam. He's a little dehydrated and something is obviously wrong, but we don't know what. I brought a stool sample in with me and they are doing blood work too. They wanted to keep him there overnight but I said that I'd like to keep him home if possible (they don't have overnight staff, and Sam is a big baby who doesn't do well when he's not home).
So they are both still at the vet...I call back at 2pm to see if I can get Bodie and will get Sam before they close. I'm very worried about my boys.
Oh, Brenda, how upsetting! I hope everything is easily fixable and the guys feel better soon.
Good luck! My boy had the flu last week. It lasted about 3 days.
I'd be worried sick, too. Hoping everything's fine with them both.
I'd bring Sam home, too, if there is no overnight staff. I've never quite understood why vets want to keep a dog overnight when there's nobody there. Clearly you are much more able to watch him and react to a crisis than an empty vet office would be.
Why do you have to wait until Friday for test resuults? Mine does them on the spot. I hope they are better soon. i don't see the point of them staying over night if no one is going to be there. Good thoughts for the boys and you.
Oh Brenda, how scary! I'm so sorry to hear your boys aren't feeling well.I hope they check for tick diseases in the blood panel, make sure they do. I said the same to Nance yesterday about her boy. Lameness is a huge symptom. Even if ticks are not normal in your area, there are so many varieties now, they are popping up everywhere.
Prayers.
