I saw The Help over the weekend. I loved the book. Loved it. I even read it twice. I was disappointed by the movie. I had heard lots of good things about it so maybe my expectations were too high. Anyway, I thought they could've done a better job. It seemed like too much of the story was missing and Ms. Skeeter's Mom wasn't right at all, IMO.

Oh, I came back to add....Melissa McCarthy stole the show in Bridesmaids so I hope she wins.

I was disappointed in The Help too (LOVED the book), however my husband didn't read the book and thought it was one of the best movies he has ever seen (he cried twice). I guess if you didn't know what was missing, it would have been better. I kept pausing it and filling in parts that were missing, which was very annoying to him . Yes, Skeeter's mom was WRONG . . . but I thought Hilly was wrong too.

I agree about Melissa McCarthy, I hope she wins. Comedic actors don't win very often, but she deserves it.

Like usual, I haven't seen most of the other movies (I didn't see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo because I didn't want to be disappointed). I haven't even heard of some of the other movies.

Of all the movies in the categories Missy posted, so far I've only seen The Help and Bridesmaids. We have a few of the others on hold at the library.

Like usual, I haven't seen most of the other movies (I didn't see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo because I didn't want to be disappointed). I haven't even heard of some of the other movies. I read the trilogy and saw the movie and wasn't disappointed at all. I thought it was quite good, although all the holes in the story in the book are even more evident in the movie.

I think they ruined the Oscars when they went to 10 nominees. It's so obvious that it's just a way to let more movies advertise based on being a nominee that it pisses me off. It's a push to come up with 5 decent ones; 10 is just ridiculous.

The only one I've seen is "The Descendants". Wonderful movie!
I hope Clooney gets that award!

Debi, I didn't think the movie showed any of the 'power' issues with the women. It wasn't apparent that Hilly was the ringleader and the others really followed her lead, and Skeeters Mom was more abrasive and less in control, IMO.

My favorite movie in a very long time. I can't remember the last time I saw a movie where people clapped at the end.
