...our kitchen floor needs replacing ASAP. It's wood and it's rotting out in 2 spots (floods effed up underneath our house right under the kitchen). I really want the 12 x 12 tiles, but my husband is saying the new vinyl that looks like tile is better. Why? The dogs are constantly slobbering water everywhere, it's easier to clean, won't have to regrout every year, etc.
What do you think?

I too would love a new kitchen floor...I don't care if it's tile or linoleum. I also want to get rid of the carpet throughout the house.

My opinion Amy, is if you do tile, you won't have to replace it. Linoleum won't last as long. As far as cleaning goes, they both just mop up. If you use a grout sealer, I don't see why you'd have to regrout every year.
Aren't dogs nails hard on vinyl? Or maybe the newer stuff is tougher. I covered our kitchen tile with cork, but dogs are really hard on it, so it's all gouged.
Tile is hard and cold though. Honestly, I'm not sure what you should do!
I was just looking at flooring yesterday. They do have a vinyl that comes in individual tiles and you can do it with or without grout. Looked nice.
However, I've had ceramic tile in my foyer for 12years and have never had to re-grout it. Tile is so durable.
Amy and Tucker-
Linoleum is cheaperMy dogs are bad, really bad. Macy drools water like there is no tomorrow, and Frankie still love to play the "splash the water out of the bowl until it is everywhere" game.

No vinyl. It doesn't really look like tile, it doesn't last like tile, and it drags down the value of your home. Seal it properly and you don't have to be always regrouting.
Have you had a professional look at the water damage under your home? That can be a much bigger issue than the flooring choice.

If you go with tile- just add the heater thingys underneath it.Your husband is handy, he could do that no problem!
Also- rugs and runners help with the hard/cold feeling of tile.
