Cripes, I hope not.
Sounds like the perfect gig!
As a contracter, will you have to pay your own taxes? Or will they do that for you?
Amy and Tucker-
I would have to pay. They would pay me GST, I would have to bank it for tax time.
I talk like they have hired me. I interviewed and sent the signed contract, they still may decide I am not qualified enough.
Would you be considered self employed? Double check the gst thing. Dh has to pay each month. CRA has changed a lot of rules concerning self employment. It may depend on how much you make annually. I know when he first started his business, he didn't pay monthly. About two years into it or so, they changed how he had to do things. He found out during an audit. LOL
Amy and Tucker-
T...I am so happy for you. We can't get medical transcriptionists at our hospital, so they also contract out. Those girls love it, working from home. You do have an edge because of your knowledge of medical terminology. That is one reason a few did not pass orientation...the medical terminaology. You are a shoe-in girl!!
I free lanced many years ago for one of the ortho docs at the hospital doing his office transcription. My suggestion is use Excel and make a cheat sheet of words. You will soon develop a list of the ones that are used the most that you have problems spelling. And by having it on Excel you can sort it alphbetically as you add words.
Hope it works out. It would work out so great in your current situation if the job works out.
As an FYI my cousin's husband worked for the Canadian Embassy. When he was stationed in Washington DC Marg began doing transcription for a hospital. She kept right on working for the same hospital when he went back to Ottawa twice, to Anthens and Beijing. Just would drop her work to a Word Document file and they would print it at the hospital. The dictated stuff she downloaded through the internet also.
I know at the hospital system I work for about 60% of our dication is now being done by compture through a voice to transcription progam. All the Health Records staff does is verify it is correct they no longer transcribe it. But it is a very expensive system so most hosptials won't buy it.
