Ok I know we are no where ready for this, but I have seen discussion on teaching the scent articles before tha DB retreive. What does everybody use and how to teach the articles? We still have to get the CD first. Hopefullly will have 2 legs the second weekend in June.( I know just go and have fun)

I used Dawn Jec's Simply Scenting.

Dawn mentions in her book that you should teach scenting before retrieves. I plan to do that with Essy. I didn't do it with Murray because he knew how to retrieve before I ever thought about teaching scenting. He did have some confusion between the 2 at first but he did get it eventually. He does revert back to retrieving when overly stressed though so it will be interesting to see if Essy has the same issue or not.

With my next puppy I plan on doing all the foundation for Utility while it is still a puppy, even scent work. Though I did start Caleb before he had his CDX he did have his retrieve down. I used a modified tie down method but am teaching it a little different to my students. With the tie down method, Caleb caught on within a few weeks and it was just polishing and confidence building in different places.

I used a modified "Around the Clock" method with Kodi. We have not practiced for a few weeks though, and it will be interesting to see if she picks right up on it again. We are to the point of "taking it on the road" and practicing in as many different places as possible. I taught the retrieve first.
