Baloo was neutered today, and I had them do pre-anaesthetic bloodwork. Mostly because I had heard that raw fed dogs' bloodwork values were often a little different than the kibble eaters and I wanted to see where he'd fall, and I also wanted to make sure I wasn't killing him. (I'm nothing if not a paranoid worrywart. :embarrass
So, the vet calls me shortly after I dropped him off to talk about his bloodwork values. Apparently, they were all in the "normal" range except his BUN level. She said that the "normal" range was 2.5 - 9.6 (or something like that) and Baloo's was 10.
So, she did say that dogs fed a high protein diet sometimes have a higher BUN, but I am to bring in a urine sample when I go back for his post-neuter checkup to make sure that his kidneys are OK.
Basically, does anyone have any literature I can take with me or studies I can quote/reference? Does there exist some sort of baseline for what a raw fed dog's bloodwork values should be..?? Has anyone done bloodwork on their dogs with similar results? Should I be worried?
TIA!!

AWESOME!
I'm assuming Boo-man is sleeping right now. He's home with Dan, and I have to work.
He was OK before I left, woozy and groggy, but tail still a-wigglin' and trying to find toys to bring us and the like.I really hope he's sleeping though, he looked really really tired when I left.

Awwww. He'll be back to himself once he sleeps off the rest of the anesthesia and the pain meds. Henery is always sooo stoned when he comes out of anesthesia.
Hugs to Baloo!!

Alfie was back to himself the next morning so he had a light walk he is bouncing around the garden now with lee lolOriginally Posted by henrysmom
Caleb had some higher levels in his urine that his holistic vet said she sees in most raw fed dogs. Caleb does not dring a lot of water, which she said can be normal, too cause of getting the water in the food. So she has me add water to his food and it has not been a problem since.
