I found some pork necks at Wal-mart today for really cheap and though Maggs would love them! We gave her one when we got home to see how she'd do with it. It seemed like she couldn't chomp up the bones...are they not good for puppies? She's 5 months old...so I figured it'd be alright.
Maggie & Ivy, the loves of my life!
Be careful with pork neck bones when you have a lab pup. If they don't tear and can instead swallow a precut peice that's too big, it could cause blockage. You want to get the whole pork neck bones not the ones that are cut up into small sections for humans. I always have to ask for the whole pork neck bones. I've never seen the whole ones they have prepackaged out in the meat aisle - they're always cut up. The larger whole pork neck bones force your pup to tear and rip pieces off the bone and not eat a precut smaller section.
The first time I gave a whole pork neck bone to my lab Ben when he was around 5 months old, he ate every bit of the meat off the bone and just left a neck bone skeleton! The next time I fed the whole pork neck bone, he ate the whole thing - bone and all. So there is a bit of a learning curve there.
I don't feed pork neck bones, they just look and feel way too hard and make me uncomfortable. I would especially hold off with a teething pup.
