Jeff Bridges Oscar winning role. Maggie Gyllenhal nominated for best supporting. Throw in a little Colin Farrell and...I might make it through this movie. Ugh. Country music. Ugh.
Jeff Bridges plays Bad Blake (seriously?) an aging country star who is playing bowling alleys and drinking the gig pay away. Maggie Gyllenhal is a young reporter who interviews him for her local paper. The two fall for each other. She has a young son and, knowing that Bad has drinking issues asks him not to drink around her son. After a major blunder involving alcohol, Maggie kicks Bad (no really, no better name than that?) out of her home and life. He decides to get sober and try to win her back.
Meanwhile, Bad (sigh...) has some issues with Colin Farrell's Tommy Sweet in the past and there is bad blood between the two of them. Bad's agent hooks him up with a gig as the opening act for Sweet and Bad has to decide if he can put the past behind him.
Hokey. Sappy. Some great scenes between Bridges and Gyllenhal, but played out like a lifetime movie. I understand the music was all original for this film? Dunno...can't get past the country part. Just not my thing.
For me: 3 STARS...if you like country? probably more.

I had the same reaction. Jeff Bridges is amazing, but the movie was just too sentimental for me. And although Maggie Gyllenhal did her best, her character was completely unmotivated. Why does she find this guy attractive? We never really know. The only part I really enjoyed was the performances.
