I just finnished this book today and started it last Sunday. It only consists of 14 chapters but they are pretty lengthy so I was still pleased. Set in 1964. Fourteen year old Lilly Owens is a young girl full of guilt over her mothers death and just in need of love. Her "father" T Ray is a cold hateful coward of a man whose favorite punnishment is to make his daughter kneel in grits until her knees turn black and blue. Lilly's only friend is Rosaleen her colored "sit in" mother who cares for Lilly and the house. But when Rosaleen is thrown in jail for insulting three of the meanest racists in town while on her way to register to vote, Lilly knows she has to break her friend out. Once free from the police and clutches of her horrible father Lilly tells Rosaleen they will run away to Tiburon South Carolina. A place Lilly only knows about from looking at the back of picture of a black madonna that had been one of her mothers belongings. Lilly is sure if they go there all her questions about her mother will be asked. Upon arriving Lilly and Rosaleen are taken in by the wonderful and cultured Boatright sisters, kind and motherly August, sweet, emotional, and alittle simple May, proud, and beautiful June. There Lilly learns about how the family makes Black Madonna honey and soon starts to learn more about herself.
The book made me laugh, made me cry, and gave me a wonderful feeling of love for these fictional characters. If you havent picked up this book. Do so! Its a short easy read with an amazing lesson about love.
There is also a Film adaption of this book that came out in October but I unfortunately did not see it. But I definately plan to buy it when it comes out of DVD.
