One week ago, Thursday, HKs third eyelid is covering half her eye. Freaky looking, headed for vet. Vet fond scratch, more like poke into her cornea. Gave me anitbiotic ointment and another to keep her eye dilated (help healing).
Back for a recheck Tuesday. Eye is still red and 'ulcer' is not healing as well as expected. Expected that healing would be complete. Increase the frequency of both ointments. If improvement not seen by Thursday will recommend going to the U Vet School or seeing a Veterinary Opthamologist.
Back for re-recheck today, Thursday. Redness is definitiely down, but not gone. Ulcer is healing, definite improvement but not healed.
Vet does not think Opthamologist is warranted yet, but certainly would not have a problem if I chose to go. She actually called the U and was conveying their opinion. Her recommendation was to continue the treatment for another week, come back. If I notice any degradation in the meantime to bring her in or take her to the U. Her primary concern was that the cornea was not healing faster, but since it was healing she thought we were on the right track.
Anyone have any experience with anything like this? Slow healing wound to the cornea. Do not know what caused the wound. Suspect it was from running through dead cattails in the frozen wetlands the day before.

Teddy had a corneal ulcer, from a grass seed scratch, a couple of years ago and it took ages to heal. It would look like it was getting better and then suddenly turn bad again. She had her 3rd eyelid stitched up to help it heal but this did not help and she ended up going to a specialist for surgery, where they scratched a grid into the ulcer to promote healing.
If I was you I would take the opportunity to see a specialist, you can not be too careful with eyes! Good luck![]()
Lab Addict, Thanks! I guess good news/bad news, huh! They can take time to heal, so it may not be unusual. May take added steps to get it to heal, yuk! But it does heal. Yippeee!Originally Posted by lab addict
I think I am going to see how it progresses over the weekend and if I can't detect more improvement, set up an appointment at the U vet hospital. I trust the whole staff down there. Nice people with knowledge of the most current treatments.

As long as there is improvement I wouldn't worry too much Ed. I don't remember if any of my dogs have had a corneal abrasion but I did once when my hard contacts scratched my cornea. Hurt like you know what and took awhile to heal.
