Just noticed Bo eating his own poop. Yuck. How harmful and how can I stop it (other than cleaning up immediately-duh)? I'm sure this has been covered before, but the only thing I found was giving him some pineapple to eat (?).
thx.
Hershey Kisses eats
Goose, Rabbit, Dog, Horse, and Deer poop. That is all the poop that I have seen her go after and been able to identify.
She had a bad bout with diarrhea two days after she had a feast on horse manure. It seemed to be a long time after she ate it, but I have chosen to blame the diarrhea on the horse droppings.
I choose to prevent her consumption of animal waste if I possibly can, but it happens. She is still alive.

But the best thing I did was to clean it up immediately after they go!

O.K. Sounds like it's not as much a health hazard as just plain disgusting. I'll just have to be a bit more attentive to keeping the yard clean, especially since we're expecting a new pup in a couple months. Thanks.
I have a poop eater. His favourite party trick is to bring it and eat it in front of guests.
I have tried pineapple, telling the poop how bad it is (heard this works), garlic. Only thing to do is pick it up so he can't get it.
Yes it is disgusting, but I have seen dogs eat worse. Other dogs before it hit the ground.

Picking it up as it hits the ground is the only thing that works for me and most times the less access they have - they will outgrow the behavior.
It has also been said that it is a learned behavior so try to avoid your new pup witnessing this.
Feeding a grain free food helps in some cases and i believe it has helped in mine.
My girls have outgrown the habit. You are right, it's not unhealthy, just disgusting.
Lizzie loves to eat poop, any but her own.... she always has and I suspect she always will, if caught in the act she acts all sheepish like as she knows we don't like it...
