    Default Antibiotics

Will antibiotics cause dogs to have diarrhea? Zakk was put on antibiotics for 10 days for a mild rash on his belly. The rash has gone away but he has had diarrhea since he has been on the atibiotics. Nothing else in his diet has been changed, only the addition of meds. Has anyone else run into this and how long did it take for for everything to return to normal.

He has not had any accidents until today.... we were out of town longer than anticipated and he went in his kennel (he has not done this in a long time and we were about an hour late on his normal dinner/potty time). Boy, was it a mess :-X. We fully take the blame for it :-[. At least he got to play in the pool for a while to make sure he was clean .

Absolutely. The antibiotics do not know the differences between the good stuff in the gut and the bad stuff causing problems/illness. Try adding some probiotics to his diet. You can add yogurt, but typically dairy adversely affects antibiotics, so I wouldn't go that route so long as he needs the drugs.

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. Sometimes it clears up within a few days. My little dog Prudence has been on an antibiotic before and had diarrhea and the vet opted to change antibiotics for her due to the amount of time she needed to be on them. I would call your vet and see what they say. Hope Zakk feels better soon.

If you use any type of probiotic, make sure to give them separate from the antibiotic by at least 4 hours. Otherwise they may cancel each other out.

Thanks! He has finished his antibiotics but I really just wanted to make sure this was "normal". Everything seems to be getting back to normal this morning.
