I vaccinate my dogs for it in the spring. I DO NOT use the Lepto that comes in the distemper/parvo shot, I use a separate 4-way Lepto which covers ALL of the strains out there. Generally, the strain in the D/P shot doesn't cover the most common strain. I use the Vanguard 4-way Lepto. Remember the Lepto portion expires after about 6 months.

Here it isn't due to the freeze. Of course, this year has been weird so it would prolly have been prudent to revaccinate in the fall IF I had known the winter was going to be so weird.

Checked with my Vet's office today and no they are still not routinely vaccinating for Lepto. They do carry a vaccine that covers 4 strains (not sure which ones), but my Vet wasn't in the office and the receptionist wasn't sure in what circumstances they were giving it. I would assume mainly for dogs travelling to areas where Lepto could be an issue. She couldn't remember having a case here.....and she's worked there for a long time. Next time I'm in to see my Vet I'm going to ask him about it. She did tell me that the 4 strain vaccine they carry is a Fort Dodge product.

My nephew actually contracted it a couple years ago. It took an infectious disease specialist to diagnose it. He was very sick, and the treatment made him really sick. He had to stick to it, because it was the only way to cure it. He got it in early summer. So that means we definately have it here. I am going to call my vet on Monday. Labby....do you think its a warm weather thing, and we don't need to worry in winter? It has been cold here. In the 20's at night lately.

So I got online and found that there is a spike in Lepto in pets in Oregon. Vets recommend vaccination. I worry, Sophie plays in a natural spring up behind our house that comes out on the ground. There are a lot of areas where it doesn't freeze for much of the winter (Pacific North West/Coastal for example). So for those where winter is fairly mild (and where Lepto is an issue) does anyone actually vaccinate twice a year? Does it help if you have the occasional freeze over winter or is it only safer when it's a constant freeze....i.e. no puddles etc.? I'm glad that at present and for some time at least it hasn't been an issue here, but if it was I'd be worried for half the year because our winters are mostly above freezing.

Also does any use the Fort Dodge vaccine.....the 4 serovar separate one?

i live in Canada, i take my dogs in to the woods for walks and there's always stagnant water around that they seem to love. So i'm going for the lepto vaccine as i usually do. juts once a year, and my vet told me before things thaw is fine.

I called my vet today and was told that Sophie was vaccinated for Lepto with her shots she already got. Our vet does a 4th parvo/dist as well. I am worried that you said you use a separate vaccine, and that Sophie might not be covered for all strains. The vet-tech said she is covered. Still, I am concerned.
