2 years is a good time to give them adult food.

I switched both of mine at around 4-5 months, as advised by their breeders.

WHAT? No - you can switch around 5 months when growth starts to slow down.
Sharon - still not a dude.

I have a 4 1/2 month old lab. I am curious -- wouldn't he stay on puppy food until he's a year. That's what I assumed but I see much shorter times suggested here. Rationale?

I know that gone are the days of purina puppy chow for a year but its been 5 years since we've had a young puppy so when to change and why is pretty important to me. 4 months seems too young to me and a year too old. My gut says 7-8 mos but thats not based on any science. Anybody have some real data on this. He's starting on ProPlan Puppy...regular....because I agree that labs aren't big dogs. Newfs & Irish Wolfhounds are big dogs.

Ask your breeder, and then go by that. I switched at that age because that is what the breeder said. It makes sense. They go through a goofy growth stage at 4-5 months.
