There is a lot of controvery out there about the Bordetella vaccine. I understand kennel cough is not really life threatening and the side effects of the vaccine can be worse than the actual virus. Abbey has had her first intramuscular vaccine and is scheduled for her booster tomorrow. She is required to have this shot to participate in puppy classes and open play time. My question is, has anyone really seen any side effects to the vaccine itself?

No real signs. Right after the vet did it (they put this stuff in his nose.) not really a shot.... but he did cough- vet said sometimes the medicine goes down their throat and makes them try to cough it up. He didn't like it but he LOVEES playing with other dogs

"A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water log stick will do just fine. A dog doesn't care if your rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he'll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?"- John Grogan
Java and Moka both got the vaccine once because it was required for them to attend doggy rehab.
They haven't gotten it since.
I didn't see any side effects from it, but if it's not necessary for my girls to have it for a good reason, I won't give it to them.
Kennel cough IS dangerous for puppies...it can quickly turn into pneumonia, making for a very sick little baby.
Thank you, that is good to know. I wouldn't be giving it either if it wasn't required but she loves to play with other dogs too. And she absolutely loves her nosework class!
I don't do bordatella as I don't think it is remotely effective - but if it's required to do what you want to be involved in - so be it!
Just also wanted to tell you your girl is stunning! Quite a lovely Lab!
Sharon - still not a dude.
Thank you Sharon. And she is very mellow for her age. We get a lot of compliments and alot of people don't believe she is 7 months old because of her calmness.
