It seems so long ago and only yesterday we received an e-mail from the Lake Erie Labrador Rescue Lady asking that we go look at a Lab being held at the Wood County Animal Control office in Bowling Green Ohio, about a 45 minute drive from the house. Red had died the first of September and we had told the Rescue Lady we were looking to adopt another Lab. She sent a picture of a large and rather angry looking yellow Lab and asked we go take a look. About the same time, Wife had found a Lab on the 'Net about four hours away. She had arranged to go visit the far away Lab the next Saturday. I tried for four days to get out early from work to go visit the yellow Lab but Animal Control closed at 4:30pm and I could not get away in time.
That Friday afternoon I again got hung up at work without being able to go to get to BG. When i got home I was thinking about what to Saturday. All of a sudden I became light headed, dizzy, nauseated, and had intestinal cramps. Oh I was absolutely miserable for about a half hour. I decided there was no way I could do a 8 hour round trip feeling this bad so maybe we could go visit the angry looking yellow Lab in BGO. As soon as I thought that, all symptoms immediately stopped.
Saturday, September 15, 2001 we went to Bowling Green Ohio. When we told the Animal Control Officer who we were she replied Thank God for Lab Rescue! She led us back into the cages. She told us the Lab that was jumping up and down had been found in a school yard the third week of August with no collar or chip and nobody had claimed him. His left eye was messed up but he seemed friendly. When she went to leash him he put his head through the loop on his own and was led us to the visiting room. He rummaged through the toy box, found the toy he was looking for, brought it over to where I was sitting on the floor and draped himself across my legs to have a good chew on the toy.
He was big, a little on the young side maybe could have been two or three, his nose took him to many places he did not belong, his eye was messed up, and I was afraid Wife would not be able to control him. I asked when he might be getting his forever home. In almost a whisper she replied Tuesday
his body goes to the landfill. As soon as she said that, I realized why had had gotten sick the night before. Wrap him up we'll take him.
Lab Med helped with his eye, though he did lose it the following year to secondary Glaucoma. The specialist said he was about 4 years old.
So eight years and two days later, Happy Got Cha Day Jack! It has been worth every pirate attack and Vet visit and then some. For a 12 year old dog you act pretty young.
