Suppose a dominate spade female lab has been humping an intact male lab for a year, and all of a sudden the tables turn and the male is humping the female with actual penetration. The female doesn't seem to mind, but does this have any health risks? I have stopped it everytime they do it, but it might be going on while I am working. Both dogs are almost three years old.
Are you sure there is penetration? Normally the vulva has to be swollen and soft for it to occur. Yes there can be injury to both if they should by chance tie and nobody is there to supervise. There was a well known stud dog who had his penis bone broken.
I would suggest if you suspect this happening to separate the two when you cannot watch them.

Laura, I am not 100 percent sure there is actual penetration, but his "lipsick is out around 5 inches long and disapears under her tail. I have always stopped it immediately and have never really gotten on my hands and knees to look under her tail to see if it is actually in her vagina.Originally Posted by labby
I'm thinking it's an outside tie, Gene. No penetration, he's just getting swollen and "trying" to breed. Next time it happens, take a look. Look underneath her to see if you see his engorged penis. I'm thinking you will. If they break apart right away as you approach, then you know there isn't any penetration.
Generally, the engorging doesn't happen until he's already penetrated and they tie. That's what causes the tie in dog breeding, the engorged bulbus glandis.

Ok, thanks Laura. False alarm as they break away as soon as I yell "NO!"
Outside tie, Gene.

If you can't watch them, I would crate one of them. If your boy ends up humping too much, he can become engorged and sometimes the penis can become stuck outside the sheath and get very dry which is painful for them and I think I heard it's dangerous. The sheath can also roll in on itself. If you don't want to spend time with a wet cold rag and some lube trying to help the problem (or else have a vet take care of it) I would recommend keeping it from happening.

Neutering him might help as well, Gene. Might remove some of the "desire".![]()
