I just trimmed Odie's nails, and now one of his nails is bleeding kind of bad. How do I stop the bleeding? Will it stop on if I don't have peroxide or whatever is commenly used to treat this? I need help fast. It's bleeding kind of bad.
Nevermind. False Alarm. The bleeding stopped within 5 minutes. I must've just barely clipped it too short. He didn't even notice it. I went outside with him right after I wrote the original message, to avoid getting blood all over my floor, and then I took a wet wash cloth and wiped off his foot. The bleeding had already stopped.
I'm not seriously considering buying one of those tools to file his nails instead of clip them. Can anybody recommend something that has worked well for them?
We came back inside, and he started licking his foot. Now it's bleeding again. It' bleeding really slow now. Any advice?
After recieving zero replies after an hour, I searched the net. The bleeding stopped on it's own again, but I found out that you can put a quick dab of corn starch on the nail to stop the bleeding. I just happen to have corn starch in the cuboard, so I'll use that if it starts again.
A lot of people on here use a dremel
Personally Jasper tends to keep his trimmed himself !

Pick up some styptic powder to use in the event this happens again. (And, unfortunately, it probably will.) Cutting toenails is difficult!
I nicked one of my guys pretty badly a few years ago and I couldn't find my styptic powder. I ended up putting some regular baking flour in a plastic baggie and wrapped it around his foot --while applying pressure to the nicked toenail. The flour (and blood) kind of caked together and formed a seal.

Just seeing this Scoper. The advice already posted is what you need to know. Another solutionis to have someone trim them for you. Once was enough for me, I don't need to draw me dogs blood.
As a side comment, half-past midnight and you are looking for quick replies??![]()
You did the right thing searcing the web, should have started there at that hor. Most of us have dogs and can't stay up that late, early rise required to take dogs out. Some of us are just old and can't stay up that late independent of dogs.

I have some Kwik-Stop gel I bought from drsfostersmith. I nicked Angus once and he bled like crazy all over our kitchen. Ever since then, whenever I am doing nails, I get out the Kwik-Stop gel, uncap it, and have a paper towel ready to go. In more than three years I haven't nicked him again, but I go through this ritual every single time.
You can also use baking soda. Either way, my thought is to be prepared each and every time, because you never know when you'll slip or they'll move at the last instant.

kwik stop is great but I actually prefer corn starch for mild nicks ... and flour will do in apinch although you nee to redo it often
I try to avoid quicking nails at all costs - I find it makes animals more then a little reluctant to have nails trimmed again
I have the opportunity for LOTs of practise though if I didn't have quite as many nails in my house I might go for a pro as well
I once set a goal to trim nails once a week .. always at the same time - I realized one day that I was being pretty good about it when the Xfiles music came on and every animal in the house showed up for their nail trim and treat!
I'm sorry I am just seeing your post now
