    Default Air Humping?

    Alright, have a question:

Simon has developed an, um, interesting new behavior lately. When I come home for lunch, and also when we come home in the evening, we are treated to a flamboyant display of what I guess should be called "air humping." It involves a back arched like a cat, vigorous thrusting, and a special guest appearance by none other than Mr. Peepers. He wanders about aimlessly looking almost confused, humping and thrusting for a minute or so, or until someone says, "HEY HEY HEY! PUT THAT AWAY!"

I should clarify, he is not humping us. Just the air in the general vicinity of us.

    WTH is this about?

LOL; my little guy, Woodstock, used to do that. I think they are just excited, carried away with emotion, so to speak! Zena tries to hump Zoe when she and Dutch get into play. It's her way of "joining in".

Oh don't worry. Megan (girl beagle) is overly fond of humping molecules in the air. They don't care and she does no harm, so... there ya go.

Maverick does this. Air and his bed. Our philosophy has always been as long as it is not another dog or us, we don't care. He can hump his bed, his toys, and the air all day long.

He is displaying arousal. You coming home may be the thing that is causing it, and if it is at the same time everyday it is being strenghtenend and reinforced by you entering. Look at how you come through the door, your behavior and what you do. Are you making a big deal of it, are you saying something like, "time for luch, here you go, wait mama will get it right away." All these things are cues for him to get aroused, food is a primary reinforcer for dogs.
I don't see anything wrong w/ the behavior other than you may not want it. If that is the case then you need to alter your behavior to change his. I would need more information to accurately evaluate the scenario, but this is a jumping off point.

Good luck, and if you are interested in pursuing how to proceed I would be glad to help.

Mr Peepers? I never heard it called that, kinda like the term. " Is that a peepers in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" Seriously though, Have you changed your cologne or anything recently that might cause this new behavior?
