We just brought home an 8-week old male black lab. His breeder gave us the paperwork for AKC registration. Before we pay the fee to have him registered, I was wondering if there are actually any benefits to doing so. We don't intend to breed or show him. He's just a family dog. Is it worth the 20 bucks?
I think it's worth it. You may find your new pup loves obedience, agility or some other sport that he can compete in. Registering him now will save having to do it later if that happens.

I would, i never intend to breed Alfie (he is getting done in 2 weeks) and i always said id never show him BUT now i kinda want to enter him into local shows for fun and NEVER SAY NEVER if we enjoy it ill enter him into bigger things
It's a matter of personal preference - I have a lab that was given to me - and after age 2 so papers were over $100 - as she'd not been sent in prior to this - but I registered her just so I knew more about her and so I felt better about things - I wanted them for me - no other reason...
I would do it. The breeder would probably like all their pups registered, and you will be listed as the owner of your dog forever. It's $20, just do it.

I've had Trooper and Bailey for 6 years, both are registered. Both are fixed and are just couch potatoes. I did it just cause I coudl, no other reason.
<br />My dog's not spoiled ... I'm just well trained!
Kinda the same thing here...I wanted to do it bceause I wanted Tal's pedigree. Plus I wanted time to look into the free month of health insurance you get. I opted to go ahead and get it.Originally Posted by Trooper
Is it typical for the breeder not to pay that fee as part of the pup's price? Marlan came already registered.... ?

Different rules in Canada than the US. In the US, the breeder gives the registration papers to each buyer for them to fill out as the new owners. The AKC is now offering breeders a discounted registration price if we do the registration for all our puppies all at once, but that would mean the breeder would then give each dog it's "AKC Registered Name". You as the buyer would either have to keep that name or PAY the fee to change the name, and if the dog has won anything (including CGC I believe) you can't change the name at all.

That is very interesting. We were able to choose our own registered name for Mar, and then we e-mailed it to the breeder and she submitted the paperwork to CKC. We got our certification in the mail.
