Default Sometimes it like beating my head against a brick wall

I get so frustrated sometimes when I try to teach the dogs something and the DH either doesn't go along with the idea or trains with the complete opposite view in mind. Example - I am trying to teach the dogs to come to a blown whistle. There are times when I don't have enough wind or spit to whistle myself and it's not that loud. So I did my research and I found my old basketball whistle and started blowing and treating, gradually moving to blowing when they weren't in the room and rewarding when they came to me. So far so good. Now the DH gets into the act, only he's using the whistle to tell them not to do something, and no rewards. The other day he tells me that the dogs were all running across the yard after a squirrel and heading towards the plants, so he blew the whistle and they all stopped and came back. I said did you reward them and he replied he doesn't reward bad behaviour . I said you blew the whistle asking them to come back to you, which they did over chasing a squirrel which is their ulitmate joy - and that's bad behavior???? I sometimes wonder why I bother.

Now I am trying to teach them to sit when I come in the door rather than jump. I haven't told him

EXACTLY!!! Why do they undermine our training efforts? I've pretty much given up. I'm tired of doing it one way and SO doing it another. My poor dogs are confused!!!

It's not the destination, it's the journey!

Maybe you should teach him that when he hears the whistle blow, he's gonna get a knock upside the head! (JK)

Okay, ladies! This complaint travels both ways, so be careful. Let's not make it a gender thing, it isn't. It is trainer verses other.

i.e. HK trained to 'Park It' when we are seated at the table. 'Park It' with a point to her carpet, and she goes right to it and lies down. If we are sitting to eat, she gets a raw carrot and knows she will get another one if she stays until we are done.

I am doing something in the other room, DW is at the kitchen table. 'Go Away!', 'GO Away!', 'GO AWAY!'

'Try telling her to Park It'

'I don't have to. She just went to her carpet.'

    Duh!

My wife and I had a similar issue regarding her training about a month into having sami... It actually was one of our biggest fights to date... Well, long story short I won the argument and Sami is an angel! My wife gave in and did things my(and the trainer whom we paid to help us do this right)... It can be rough, it's like arguing about how to raise your child. Funny enough we never had this isssue with our daughter...

Sorry I am laughing at you all - BUT - one of our good friends has a bishon that is just a house pest - and a dolly at that! (She keeps their border collie and our labs in line as necessary - all summer at the boat - and she's just 1 this year!)

Jackie taught her to sit, dance, down, and speak on command. Dale - in a fit of boredom one night - taught her that sit means dance, dance means speak, down means sit and speak means sit. Jackie is not amused - but we all love it - and reward her for the behavior Dale permanently trained in - so as not to punish her for doing what she was taught, even if it's wrong!

However, the best part was being there to see Jackie lose it the 1st time this all went down!
